How to Play Pickleball for Beginners

Are you looking for a new hobby to try? Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the U.S., and Chicken N Pickle is the perfect place to get started! Whether you're picking the paddle up for the first time, or are wanting to learn more about the game, this guide will take you through all the basic steps you'll need to know to become a pickleball pro!

What is Pickleball?

Pickleball is a fast paced, easy to learn sport that is perfect for all ages. It's a combination of ping pong, badminton, and tennis all in one. It is played on a smaller court with a paddle and a plastic ball similar to a wiffle ball.

Basic Pickleball Rules

1. The Court and Equipment

A pickleball court is only one fourth the size of a tennis court, making it 20 ft wide and 44 ft long. The 34 inch net is in the center of the court. Players use paddles that are a little bigger than a ping pong paddle and a small lightweight plastic ball with holes in it.

2. How to Serve

The server must serve the ball underhand to the diagonal quadrant area that their opponent is in. The ball must bounce once on the receivers side before returning the ball, and only one serving attempt is allowed.

3. The Double Bounce Rule

The most confusing rule in pickleball for beginners is usually the double bounce rule. Players must let the ball bounce once before returning the ball after a serve. Then, the serving team must also let the ball bounce again before hitting it back. After those two bounces, players may hit the ball out of the air.

4. The Kitchen Rule

The kitchen is a 7 foot area on both sides of the net. Players are not allowed to step in the kitchen while hitting a ball in the area. If the ball bounces in the kitchen, players may step into the kitchen to return the ball and then immediately exit.

5. Pickleball Scoring

Pickleball games go to 11 points and you must win by 2 points or more. Players can only score points while they are serving. If you are recieving, you will not earn any points, only the ball back. When playing in doubles, both players on the team will serve before the other team gets to serve.

Beginner Tips and Tricks for Playing at Chicken N Pickle

1) Start Slow and Learn the Basics

It can be tempting to just hit the ball as hard as possible, but it's important to start slow and get used to the technique. Start by focusing on getting the ball over the net, and then add more power as you get used to it.

2) Keep the Ball Low

The closer you keep the ball to the net, the harder it will be for your opponent to slam it back down on you. This will put you in control of the game.

3) Master the Dink Shot

Another great strategy for keeping your opponent from not smashing the ball on you is the dink shot. This soft and controlled shot barley goes over the net and lands in your opponents kitchen.

4) Communication When Playing in Doubles

Just like in any sport, communication is key. It is important to communicate with your partner on who is getting what ball. Saying "Mine" or "Yours" will help avoid confusion.

5) Have Fun!

Pickleball is a great way to get active, make some friends, and have fun!
